(born 1915 , Baltimore, Maryland, USA; died 1959 , New York, USA)
Inspirational jazz vocalist who at her peak in the 1930s and 1940s brought
a blues lyricism to the laidback phrasings of swing. Holiday worked with
band leaders Count Basie and Artie Shaw as well as horn player Lester
Young and made her name with an anguished rendition of 'Strange Fruit'.
She mythologized her status as an addict and victim and died prematurely
in hospital while under police arrest.
