Cindy Sherman
(born 1954, Glen Ridge, New Jersey, USA)

Post-feminist American artist whose photographs style her in provocative and critical situations reminiscent of sexual stereotype. Her most famous series, Untitled Film Stills, was begun in 1977 and draws on the imagery of B-movies and film noir to create a gallery of disturbingly profane types -- the Girl About Town, the Runaway, the Femme Fatale. Critics claim Sherman's work exposes the mechanisms of identity formation.
